SUROVELL RECEIVES ENDORSEMENT OF VA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION AND FED. OF TEACHERS

SUPPORTED BY LOCAL EDUCATORS ACROSS THE DISTRICT

Mt. Vernon, VA- Local and State Teachers Associations announced their endorsement for Delegate Scott Surovell's Campaign for the Virginia State Senate.  The Virginia EducationAssociation and Virginia Federation of Teachers revealed endorsements after reviewing the two candidates legislative platforms and conducting an  in depth questionnaire about issues that matter most for educators.  Fairfax, Prince William and Stafford Educators Associations recommended Surovell for the endorsement.

Surovell stated that, "I am thrilled to have the support of the Virginia Education Association and Federation of Teachers and every local educators association in the 36th Senate District. Our children are our future and our professional teachers are at the core of our investment in the future.  It is critical that we work with our educators to ensure students are prepared for the demands of tomorrow and are prepared to meet the needs of a 21st Century work force."

Surovell is a product of the Fairfax County Public Schools system and attended Hollin Hall Elementary, Waynewood Elementary School, Stephen Foster Intermediate and West Potomac High School. He went on to attend James Madison University and graduated from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1996. His father graduated from Mount Vernon High School, and all four of his children attend Fairfax County Public Schools.  Delegate Surovell’s' mother was the first in her family to graduate from college after eleven generations in Virginia due to Virginia's transition to free public education at the turn of the century.

"My family would not be where it is today without Virginia's public schools and affordable higher education system.  However, today all of my children attend schools with trailers, teachers paid uncompetitive salaries while teachers are resorting to crowd funding to fund critical needs for tools such as computers.  We must do more to give our teachers the resources they need to ensure our public schools are strong and kids can succeed, regardless of the child's zip code or county."

VEA President Meg Gruber stated, "Delegate Surovell has proven himself to be a friend of public education in the House.  In fact, he is the recent recipient of VEA’s Solid as a Rock award, which celebrates his perfect voting record in support of public education in the last two legislative sessions.  He received this award in 2013 as well. We know he will put kids first in the Virginia Senate."

American Federation of Teachers President Steven Greenburg went on to say, “Delegate Surovell is a fighter for our students and our teachers. He consistently works to increase school funding, close the digital divide, make our teachers pay more competitive and reduce class sizes. We are proud to endorse his candidacy for State Senate.”

Delegate Scott Surovell is currently serving his third term in the House of Delegates and represents the 44th District.  He won the VEA Solid as a Rock Award in 2011, 2013 and 2015 and received 100% ratings from the VEA all six years he has served in the House of Delegates.
