DEMOCRATS NOMINATE SUROVELL FOR 36TH DISTRICT

Mt. Vernon, Virginia – At 5:00 p.m. today, Senator Scott Surovell became the Democratic nominee for the 36th Senate District. He will be unopposed in the June 12, 2019 Democratic Primary. Today was the final day for candidates to file paperwork to run for the Democratic nomination and Surovell was the only candidate to file in the 36th Senate District. No candidate has yet filed to run for the Republican party nomination. The 36th District Republican party committee will have until June 12 to nominate a candidate.

“I’m honored to accept the nomination from my party and excited for the campaign ahead,” Surovell said. “Last year was my most successful legislative session yet and I look forward to continuing to fight for the People of Fairfax, Prince William and Stafford Counties.  Going into the next election cycle, Democrats are poised to pick up seats in the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia and return the Democratic Caucus to the majority.”

Local leaders endorsed Surovell’s re-election bid. “Scott is fighting for our community in Richmond and I am pleased to support his re-election,” Prince William NAACP President Cozy Bailey said.

Surovell came to the Senate in 2016 after serving for six years in the House of Delegates where he served as Caucus Chairman in 2014-15 and Campaign Chairman from 2011-2014.  As Campaign Chair and Caucus Chairman in the House, Surovell successfully recruited candidates and helped turn four delegate seats held by Republican legislators to Democratic control. The Senate Democrats elected Surovell to be one of the two Senate Minority Whips in December of last year. Currently, Republicans hold a one-seat majority in the chamber where the Lieutenant Governor can cast tie breaking votes.
