2019 Awards

The Virginia Equal Rights Coalition’s Equal Rights Champion Award. Awarded in honor of Sen. Surovell’s years of strong and persistent dedication in support of Equal Rights Amendment ratification by the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Grade A from Sierra Club Virginia Chapter. Awarded to Senator Surovell for maintaining an excellent voting record on environmental issues.

American Council of Engineering Companies of Virginia Legislator of the Year. Awarded to Sen. Surovell for working hard since 2010 to solve transportation problems along U.S. Route 1. As a State Senator, Sen. Surovell has introduced legislation aimed at solving transportation problems on U.S. Route 1 and has presented proposals for systematically adding funds yearly towards the Metro’s maintenance backlog.

2018 Awards

HosPAC Healthcare Champion. Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association recognized Sen. Surovell and other elected leaders for the important role they played in achieving a bipartisan, fiscally-responsible budget compromise that enabled as many as 400,000 uninsured Virginia adults to gain health care coverage. 

Virginia League of Conservation Voters Legislative Leader. Awarded in recognition of making conservation a priority in the Senate.

2016 Awards

Virginia League of Conservation Voters Legislative Hero. Awarded for introducing Senate Bill 537, which would have mandated safe closure of all of our state’s coal ash ponds by requiring this toxic waste to be excavated and transferred to dry, lined and permitted landfills and then requiring remediation of these sites.

Protector of the Potomac, Potomac Riverkeepers Network. Awarded to Senator Surovell for his efforts to keep Virginia’s waters clean, most notably in 2016 with his fight to prevent coal ash from being dumped into Quantico Creek, a tributary of the Potomac River.

2014 – 2015 Awards

2015 Leaders in the Law, Virginia Lawyers Weekly. This award recognizes the lawyers across the commonwealth who are setting the standard for other lawyers in Virginia. The “Leaders in the Law” award recipients are recognized for changing the law, serving the community, changing practice or improving Virginia’s justice system. Senator Surovell was the fourth legislator and youngest member of his 30 member class and was honored for to his efforts to defeat proposed legislation to exclude all information regarding Virginia executions from the Virginia Freedom of Information Act.

2015 Champion of Consumer Rights, National Association of Consumer Bankruptcy Attorneys. Senator Surovell was recognized for his fight against predatory lenders and for expanding the rights of consumer debtors to retain property during bankruptcy proceedings. This year’s award recipients also Ombudsman, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD).  

2014 & 2015 Legislative Leader, League of Conservation Voters.This award is given to legislators who are consistent supporters of conservation and environmental issues in the Virginia Legislature.

2015 Solid as a Rock Award, Virginia Education Association & Fairfax Education Association.This award was given to members with a 100% voting record on education issues for 2014 -2015.

President’s Award, Fairfax County NAACP.Senator Surovell received this award for his exceptional leadership and support to the communities of Hybia Valley and Gum Springs in Fairfax County, in ensuring they are not left behind in the county’s revitalization.

Legislator of the Year Award, Virginians for Alternatives to the Death Penalty. Senator Surovell was given this award due to his steadfast opposition to capital punishment and in recognition of his efforts to defeat execution secrecy legislation.

2013 Awards

2013 Solid as a Rock Award, Virginia Education Association & Fairfax Education Association. This award was given to members with 100% voting record for 2012-2013.

Founder’s Award, Northern Virginia Democratic Business Council.  Given for being one of the founding members of the organization in 2003.

2013 Legislative Leader Award, Virginia League of Conservation Voters.  This award is given to legislators who were rated as supporters of conservation and environmental issues in the Virginia Legislature.

President’s Award, Fairfax Bar Association.  Given for efforts during the 2013 General Assembly Session to protect two Fairfax County Judgeships which were at risk of being defunded due budget restrictions.

Sierra Club Solar Champion’s Award. Given in honor of Delegate Surovell’s work passing HB 1917 which added solar thermal energy to the Virginia Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard allowing solar thermal energy system owners to sell renewable energy credits on the open market.

Virginia Coalition for Distraction Free Driving – Award for Texting While Driving Legislation. Award given for efforts to enact legislation making texting while driving a primary offense in Virginia.

2012 Awards

2012 Legislative Leader Award, Virginia League of Conservation Voters.  This award is given to legislators who were rated as supporters of conservation and environmental issues in the Virginia Legislature. 

2011 Awards

2011 Solid as a Rock Award, Virginia Education Association & Fairfax Education Association:  This award was only given to four legislators in Northern Virginia for support of public education in Virginia.

2010 Awards

2010 Rookie of the Year, Virginia Education Association:  This award was given to several Northern Virginia legislators for their advocacy for education issues during their first year in the legislature.  I was especially proud to receive this award as a Fairfax County Public School graduate and the father of four Fairfax County Public School children.  

2010 Washington, D.C. Metropolitan Area Building and Trades Council, Legislator of the Year:  The Council honored me with their award for my advocacy on behalf of issues relating to working men and women in Virginia.
