SENATOR SUROVELL, DELEGATE KRIZEK, AND FRIENDS OF LITTLE HUNTING CREEK HOST ANNUAL LITTLE HUNTING CREEK CLEAN UP

Mt Vernon, Virginia – Senator Scott Surovell and Delegate Paul Krizek are partnering with the Friends of Little Hunting Creek to sponsor the annual 2019 Little Hunting Creek Cleanup event on Saturday, May 11, 2019.

Little Hunting Creek is one of the most severely degraded streams in Fairfax County.  In 2007, it was named “Fairfax County’s Trashiest Stream” by Fairfax County who spent over $50,000 of taxpayer funds removing trash.  The area is impacted by a substandard stormwater system, a significant retail presence, a large concentration of apartments with trash containment problems, and a large homeless population, which results in significant litter dispersal throughout the watershed.

Over the last nine years, Senator Surovell and Friends of Little Hunting Creek and their volunteers have removed over 200 shopping carts, over 500 bags of trash, over a dozen bikes, over 50 tires, multiples car seats and one .22 caliber-hunting rifle. Additionally, volunteers helped dispose of one large metal jungle gym, one bathtub, one bounce house, one lawn chair, and numerous liquor and beer cans. An extensive cleanup such as this is not possible without the help of the Mount Vernon community who take time from their schedules to help improve the local environment.

Volunteers will spend the day removing trash, litter, and debris from two sites in the uppermost watershed of the creek where it originates in Hybla Valley. Pizza, water, trash bags, and cleaning supplies will be provided to all volunteers.

There are many reasons to volunteer:

·        Gain high school and middle school community service hours

·        Gain education about local ecosystem shortcomings and impairments

·        Raise community awareness of volunteerism and environmental protection with children

·        Make your community a better place

DEMOCRATS NOMINATE SUROVELL FOR 36TH DISTRICT

Mt. Vernon, Virginia – At 5:00 p.m. today, Senator Scott Surovell became the Democratic nominee for the 36th Senate District. He will be unopposed in the June 12, 2019 Democratic Primary. Today was the final day for candidates to file paperwork to run for the Democratic nomination and Surovell was the only candidate to file in the 36th Senate District. No candidate has yet filed to run for the Republican party nomination. The 36th District Republican party committee will have until June 12 to nominate a candidate.

“I’m honored to accept the nomination from my party and excited for the campaign ahead,” Surovell said. “Last year was my most successful legislative session yet and I look forward to continuing to fight for the People of Fairfax, Prince William and Stafford Counties.  Going into the next election cycle, Democrats are poised to pick up seats in the House of Delegates and the Senate of Virginia and return the Democratic Caucus to the majority.”

Local leaders endorsed Surovell’s re-election bid. “Scott is fighting for our community in Richmond and I am pleased to support his re-election,” Prince William NAACP President Cozy Bailey said.

Surovell came to the Senate in 2016 after serving for six years in the House of Delegates where he served as Caucus Chairman in 2014-15 and Campaign Chairman from 2011-2014.  As Campaign Chair and Caucus Chairman in the House, Surovell successfully recruited candidates and helped turn four delegate seats held by Republican legislators to Democratic control. The Senate Democrats elected Surovell to be one of the two Senate Minority Whips in December of last year. Currently, Republicans hold a one-seat majority in the chamber where the Lieutenant Governor can cast tie breaking votes.

SENATE DEMOCRATS ELECT SUROVELL CAUCUS WHIP

Richmond, Virginia – The Virginia Senate Democratic Caucus elected Senator Scott A. Surovell to be Caucus Whip following Jennifer Wexton’s election to Congress earlier this month. Wexton held the position from 2016-2018.  Senator Janet Howell also serves as the second Caucus Whip.

“I’m honored and humbled that my colleagues would entrust me with this leadership position,” Surovell said. “Last year was my most successful legislative session yet and I look forward to continuing to work within our caucus and across the aisle to advance policies that lift up all Virginians.  Going into the next election cycle, we are poised for significant action this year on the structure of our tax system, investments in education equity, and funding to clean up Virginia’s coal ash problem.”

Surovell came to the Senate in 2016 after serving for six years in the House of Delegates where he served as Caucus Chairman in 2014 and Campaign Chairman from 2011-2014.  As Campaign Chair and Caucus Chairman in the House, Surovell successfully recruited candidates and helped turn four delegate seats held by Republican legislators to Democratic control. The Senate Democrats tapped Surovell for leadership as they prepare for an election year when many observers expect to see Democrats pick up seats and potentially gain the majority of the Senate. Currently, Republicans hold a one-seat majority in the chamber where the Lieutenant Governor can cast tie breaking votes.
